UPDATE: 12:20 p.m. Friday
The Washington Avenue home that was destroyed by a fire on Thursday night in Hampton Bays belongs to Hampton Bays Fire District Commissioner Rob King.
Mr. King said he was inside the home with family members when the fire started around 5:20 p.m., but they able to get out before the flames quickly spread throughout both floors of the two-story house.
"I'm at a loss right now," Mr. King said. "I lost everything."
Southampton Town Fire Marshal John Rankin said Friday morning that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. It is under investigation but it is not considered suspicious, Mr. Rankin said.
The fire appears to have begun on the first floor, toward the front of the home. Mr. King said the fire spread quickly becuase of his home's open layout and, perhaps, because he had his air conditioner on, which could have kept the flames well fed with fresh air.
Mr. King said firefighters, first from the Hampton Bays Fire Department then from from the East Quogue and Southampton departments, were on the scene within five minutes.
"The response time was unbelievable," Mr. King said. "I've never been so proud to be part of such a great organization."
Mr. Rankin said three volunteers from the Hampton Bays Fire Department were injured while battling the blaze and one was taken to a local hospital, although he did not know which one or what types of injuries the volunteers suffered.
