East Quogue teenager wants to save the Canoe Place Inn

Westhampton Beach High School sophomore is circulating a petition to save the 88-year-old structure known as the Canoe Place Inn on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays, located just west of the Shinnecock Canal.

During the Southampton Town Board meeting on Tuesday evening, Colby Herbst of East Quogue presented the petition, which included 223 signatures, to the board.

Though he now lives in East Quogue, Colby said he previously called Hampton Bays home for 12 years and does not want to see an important part of the community torn down.

“I learned about Canoe Place Inn, grew up around it, and would be sad if it was destroyed,” he said.

The owners of the 5-acre property, cousins Mitchell and Gregg Rechler of R Squared LLC in Melville, have stated that they want to demolish the inn to make way for a $100 million condominium complex.

The building is currently leased and operated as the Whitehouse nightclub during the summer.

“We’ve been taught that it’s good to be green,” Colby said during the meeting. “But it can’t be green to tear down a whole building and put condos in its place.”

Local historians who do not want to see the structure demolished have criticized the project and other critics have stated that the proposed 75-unit condominium complex is too dense for Hampton Bays.

I hope Rechler goes ahead with the plan to build the condos where canoe place inn now stands. The Rechlers development would bring added value to our community and create hundreds of needed construction jobs and other employment to the area.

The Rechler company is a class act and will help us make our community a more beautiful place to live.

let me ask a question what pupose does the inn serve our area?

I agree the Inn as it stands now does not add to our community. Who said that the building should be kept as a bar? It is short sighted to say, since the Inn is now a bar, it must always remain as such.

The Canoe Place Inn has a glorious history in our community and it is wrong to destroy it. It can preserved and restored to a Historic Inn that would compliment our area. There are other options besides condos, that would bring revenue to this town without crowding our schools and being ...more

Has everyone forgotten that we are in a severe recession?.Clearly 75 units is way too many...,Even if these developers could find the money to build some of these probably very over priced condos ,who exactly would be buying them? And who's to say, since they are from Melville, that they would use local builders and contractors anyway....Obviously, other options absolutely must be explored as well.

No, our hamlet does not need more condos. Condos are quick and easy for the developers. They build them, then get a property manager in to run them. They do not care about the impact on the surrounding area. There has got to be a middle ground where they can succeed and still be an asset to the town.

Besides, there are petitions by many of the motels in the area to turn into condos. This is only one plan. Our hamlet can not shoulder anymore of this type of building. Southampton ...more

so much for history, damn newcomers they have no idea, to them it's all about money, then they complain aout overcowding, I am so sick of the east end and thier constant wining, I just bought a home in an area that is like LI when I was a kid, with no snobs like on the east end

I never understood why people want to move to the "country" then quickly want to build more stuff - more stores, larger buildings etc. If you moved here because you like it, why change it to be more like where you left?
