Fisherman bitten by shark on Saturday

Jul 7, 2010 11:54 AM

A 20-year-old fisherman was bitten on the arm by a shark on Saturday while he was attempting to remove a hook from its mouth.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a distress call was received from the recreational fishing boat Frank Joseph at about 1 p.m. on Saturday reporting the shark bite. A high-speed launch from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock rendezvoused with the fishing boat 25 miles offshore and took the young angler aboard. The Coast Guard is not releasing the name of the injured man.

The bite happened while the fisherman was trying to free a blue shark that had just been caught by the anglers aboard the boat.

He was transported back to the station, in Hampton Bays, and taken to the hospital, where he was treated for deep puncture wounds on his right biceps. He was released the same day.

I just don't think I would bring a live shark on the boat. Is this common? I guess they REALLY needed that hook back.

By the time the rumour reached me: " fisherman had been attacked by a shark and a shark alert had been issued for Southampton beaches. The sharks were swarming because of all the seals hanging aroun!" Now we see: the fisherman cuaght the shark. He put his hand in its mouth.
