Riverside Man Dies Hours After Being Shot Outside Hampton Bays Nightclub

Nov 2, 2010 6:52 PM

A Riverside man died hours after he and a second victim were shot early Friday morning by a man dressed as a robber at a Halloween costume party at Dream Nightclub in Hampton Bays, according to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad.

Carlo Petrusa, 64, was declared dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was taken by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance following the 3:47 a.m. shooting on October 29, according to Suffolk County Police Department Homicide Squad Detective Sergeant Lamb.

Homicide detectives are still searching for the gunman, who fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

According to Southampton Town Police, the shooting occurred early Friday morning following a costume party at the nightclub.

“There was a fight at the club between contestants,” said Town Police Detective Sergeant Randy Hintze, regarding the costume contest. “Numerous subjects were involved, both inside and outside the club, and all were engaging in physical fighting.”

The second victim—Shawn Badgett, 35, of Coram, a promoter for the event—was also shot by the same gunman during the brawl, according to police. Town Police said Mr. Badgett was transported by friends to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment and released later the same day. No other injuries were reported, according to police.

Authorities said the gunman was dressed as a character from the 1995 movie “Dead Presidents,” a film about a group of Vietnam veterans who dress in all black clothing with white face makeup while attempting to steal money that is scheduled to be taken out of circulation.

According to James Vlahadamis, the son of the family that owns the club as well as the Hampton Bays Diner on Montauk Highway, Mr. Petrusa had just moved from his home on Springville Road in Hampton Bays to MacLeod’s mobile home park off Riverleigh Avenue this summer. He also said that Mr. Petrusa, who many people referred to as “Uncle Carl,” was a former New York City Police Department court officer who worked as a bodyguard for celebrities.

He said that Mr. Petrusa, who was not married and has no children, was not working at the nightclub at the time of the shooting, though he sometimes worked security at the establishment. According to Mr. Vlahadamis, Mr. Petrusa was at the club “hanging out with my dad,” Frank Vlahadamis, on the night of the shooting. He said his family does not know why Mr. Petrusa was standing outside the club at the time.

Town Police said a fight broke out inside the nightclub between a contestant dressed as a cave woman and another contestant wearing an unknown costume. The fight moved to the outside of the club, and police said a man dressed as a character from the movie “Dead Presidents,” but who wasn’t a contestant in the nightclub’s costume contest, ran to the parking lot, retrieved a handgun from his car and discharged several rounds while approaching the nightclub’s entrance.

Mr. Vlahadamis said his father was at the club at the time of the shooting and that Mr. Petrusa was struck twice by bullets, once in the abdomen and once in the buttocks. He said that he and his mother, Maria Vlahadamis, received a call from the hospital at around 1:50 p.m. on Friday informing them that Mr. Petrusa’s condition was worsening. Mr. Vlahadamis said he learned that Mr. Petrusa had died when they arrived at the hospital later that day, adding that one of the bullets had struck Mr. Petrusa close to an artery.

“We literally saw this man every day of our lives,” Mr. Vlahadamis said, adding that a moment of silence was observed last Friday night at Dream Nightclub in memory of Mr. Petrusa. “We’re devastated,” he said, later adding, “We were as close to family as we could be without being related by blood.”

“Uncle Carl was a beautiful man,” added Paul Tully, a longtime friend of Mr. Petrusa who recently moved from Hampton Bays to upstate New York. He said both he and Mr. Petrusa used to work security at local nightclubs. “He was everybody’s Uncle Carl,” Mr. Tully added.

In May, Mr. Badgett, the second shooting victim, was one of 20 people arrested following a nine-month investigation targeting heroin traffic on eastern Long Island. At the time of his arrest, detectives found more than $60,000 in cash inside his Coram home, another $90,000 in cash in a safe deposit box, as well as heroin, scales and bags, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. Mr. Badgett was charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, according to police. He was free on bail at the time of the shooting.

The drug bust, which included 19 other arrests, resulted in the confiscation of 4,430 bags of heroin packaged for street sale and almost $175,000 in cash, according to authorities. At the time, the DA’s office said the ring helped transport 2,500 bags of heroin per week from New York City suppliers to drug dealers on eastern Long Island.

I guess the SH press doesn't have a relationship wih the oners of this bar, because this is sure to be front page news. On the other hand, the melee at the boardy barn on the 40th anniversary party a few weeks ago, was not mentioned. There were cops from all over the east end there and half the place got pepper sprayed, but no article? seems a little suspect to me

I thought it was the SH Presses policy to not allow comments on crimes unless they involve celebs or politicians??

Also, please fix: The 1995 movie “Dead Presidents” tells is about group of Vietnam veterans who dress in all black clothing with white face makeup while robbing banks.
By Nature (2966), Hampton Bays on Oct 29, 10 2:16 PM
Now, as to this donnybrook or bonibrawl or whatever they call it, I say the police should stay out of it. Once those two fellows who was shot heal up, they should go out and take care of it as they see fit. In my time, we fought our own battles. Police were for sissies.
And why not?
By Manorville Major (16), manorville on Oct 29, 10 4:07 PM
The movie is not about robbing banks... It was about robbing an armored truck.

First a stabbing at the dinner and now a shooting at the canal road establishment. I think this place should be shut down. Is is a coincidence that both places are operated by the same guy? What kind of people is this owner bringing to our community? Shut this place down and the illegal night club behind the dinner! How much violence does it take?

First degree murder IMO.

Perp was in scuffle, went to get gun, and killed a man.

Pre-meditated.

Intentional.

Wanton.

Does NYS have the death penalty for murders like this?

That's about as ignorant a statement as I've seen here! Given who the late gentleman was, and what he did, he might have been employed there.

And for all your 'code words' and misspellings, you come off like an uneducated bigot.

I remember thinking it was strange when someone died outside the diner and they remained open for business the next day, with the blood still on sidewalk. I think it's completely disrespectful to reopen a club the next night after someone loses their life there. Especially if it's your family friend.

Okay, it's 'different' from what we're used to, and that alone will throw many 'regulars' off, but the terrible part is that they installed the new software, did a half-assed job of it, and then took the weekend off.

Didn't anyone in the Southampton Press' IT department test this out on a private area of their server before making it 'live' to the public?

Of course, no one here is paying anything for this, so perhaps we should just shut up.

The owner of the club and dinner is no more responsible for what happened in both circumstances than anyone else here. Could he predict that a fight would break out in the front of his establishment where one teenager would attack another with a knife? The same is true with the canal road club. Some stupid fight breaks out and two people get shot. Given the nature of late night clubs and late night dinners they are not always going to attract the most savory characters. The owner is responsible because he doesnt care about the place. How many complaints did the police get all summer and nothing was done. If you have a problem tenant you get rid of them. It's amazing that only a few people have actually commented on the most important part of this story. A MAN LOST HIS LIFE. I sometimes wonder why I bother to even look at this website. It's embarrasing to think I live with people that are so heartless and care about nothing but who to blame. Carl was a nice man. My friend believes the reason he was there was he was lonely. She says you could often find him hanging around the dinner because he felt important. People liked Carl they would come in and recognized him . He would always shake their hand and ask how they were doing. So sorry a life was lost due to the garbage that is attracted to this club. Drugs and alcohol are a mixture for trouble and security should be mandated at clubs. If the owners are having a problem with the patrons, they should call the police and have them removed. By not addressing the issues, you create an atmosphere that is unsafe for all.

By xtina72 (7), East Quogue on Nov 3, 10 4:04 PM
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital is a Trauma Center. Peconic Bay and Southampton are not. Due to the type of injury if the person is stable enough they are required to be transported to a trauma center..
By newsgeek (3), East Quogue on Nov 9, 10 3:24 PM
Very possible they were sending him to StonyBrook, but complications arose and they detoured to Brookhaven? I question why they didn't have him med-vac out of here.
By BeachGal (72), Hampton Bays on Nov 4, 10 1:05 PM
It is possible that the medevac to Stony Brook was not available due to weather, or it was out on an other call, or the eta was too long if it was at Macarthur. Brookhaven Hopsital would be the next closest Truama Center. If the patient was stable enough and the heli was unavailable, this would be where your patient would be taken.
