Proposals to convert two local motels into permanent living facilities, and the potential negative impact they could have on the surrounding community, dominated discussion during Monday night’s Hampton Bays Civic Association meeting.
Specifically, community members said they are concerned about plans for two motel properties—the Tiana Pines Apartments and the Hidden Cove Motel—stating that they are not up to code for year-round habitation. Hidden Cove Motel, which is located on West Tiana Road, is currently being converted into a full-scale homeless shelter by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services. The owners of the Tiana Pines Apartments, which is technically a motel, are looking to legally convert their complex into 16 apartments but would need a zoning variance from Southampton Town to do so.
