Hampton Bays firefighters battled a house fire at the corner of Ponquogue and Fanning Avenues. FRANK COSTANZA

Approximately 61 firefighters from various East End companies were on hand on Thursday to fight the fire on Fanning and Ponquogue Avenues in Hampton Bays. One of the first firefighters on the scene was Hampton Bays Fire Chief John Tedesco, who described a fully-involved structure fire.Immediately, an initial search was conducted of the residence to ensure that all occupants had been safely evacuated from the building. Once inside, firefighters assessed the building as too dangerous, and all personnel were ordered to evacuate the structure.
While leaving the house, one of the residents who had re-entered the house to save a pet, climbed out of a second-story window and was helped to the ground by firefighters. He was never in any immediate danger, Mr. Tedesco said.
