The Hampton Bays softball team lost its opening-round game of the Suffolk County Class B playoffs, 6-1, at home to Center Moriches on Wednesday. The loss effectively ended the season for the Lady Baymen.
Center Moriches advances to play at top seed Babylon on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Class B finals.
Hampton Bays had beaten Center Moriches, 7-2, at home on April 25, but Wednesday’s game was a much different affair. The Lady Baymen had a hard time figuring out Center Moriches starting pitcher Erin Creen, who they had faced last month.
Staked to a 1-0 lead after the first inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly, Creen helped herself out in the top of the third inning with a bases-clearing double to left center field to make it a 3-0 game for the Lady Red Devils.
Hampton Bays, meanwhile, had a number of chances, but was only able to scratch a run across in the bottom of the sixth. Marley Tyler doubled to deep left field, which drove in Megan Harris, who was courtesy running for Nicole Yeager. Yeager had singled to center field.
Center Moriches responded with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 6-1. And Hampton Bays went down in order to end the game.
