UPDATE: Police Release Photo Of Man They Say Robbed TD Bank In Hampton Bays Monday Afternoon

Sep 11, 2012 2:13 PM

Update, Tuesday, 7:30 a.m.

In a statement released overnight, Southampton Town Police said the robbery occurred about 4:40 p.m., when police received a panic alarm from the bank. A short time later, a teller made a 911 call reporting that she had been robbed.

Police arrived shortly and with the help of a New York State Police K-9 unit searched the area but were unable to locate the robber, described as a black man, about 6 feet 1 inch tall, between 25 and 35 years old, with a goatee and a stocky build, police said. He was wearing a red short-sleeved T-shirt, dark shorts, a gray New York Yankees baseball cap with a red Yankees symbol, and sunglasses.

Police said he entered the bank and handed a note demanding cash to a teller. In the note he indicated that he had a weapon. After being given an undisclosed amount of cash, he fled on foot and was last seen heading south on East Tiana Road.

No one was injured.

Detectives are seeking the public’s help locating the man, and anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 702-2230, send an email to crimetips@southamptontownny.gov, or call the crime hotline at 728-3454.

Original Story:

Police were searching for a man who robbed the TD Bank on West Montauk Highway near Tiana Road in Hampton Bays Monday afternoon.

According to radio chatter, a single man entered the bank, presented a note to a teller and fled with less than $1,000.

Details were sketchy. More information will be released as it becomes available.

Seems to be out of control a robbery a week since welfare motel was forced on the people of H B. The brand new Stop & Shop looks like a ghetto. My sister in law lives on Bellows Pond Rd & the character of the people who have been driving up and down the street has forced her to keep her children inside at all times. She used to love living there and now says it is full of what looks like criminals driving back and forth.

Well joe, this is what happens when your society begins to disintegrate.

The further the divide, the more stagnant the wages, and the more the cost of living increases, these are the results.

I'm gonna go ahead and say you've never seen a real ghetto before. You should get out more.

What a load of BS. As if the people who lived at the motel BEFORE it was taken over by the County were real savory characters? It's no worse than it was and I'd be willing to bet the clientele are better.

Where is your proof that this robbery is linked to that motel? Or is it just in your gut? Another spewer of truthiness among us.

And as Johnj says - if you think Stop and Shop looks ghetto you need to get out more. You ever visit the ol' Key Foods in HB? That was a scary ...more

The police seem to think so, they have been here all day. But I guess you know better.

A friend of my sister in laws husband who is a S.H. police officer believes they use the road to go back and fourth to Flanders looking to score drugs. I have seen the town lately and the character of the neighborhood has disintegrated to the state of scary. Thanks Tim Bishop for looking out for the wrong people.

So much miserable hate.

Do you actually think Tim is a "power broker"?

Do everyone a favor, and point your pitchfork in the proper direction. The Federal Reserve Board, corporate personhood, lobbyists, and the "elite".

If Altschuler does get in, you know what action would actually impress me? If lobbyists didn't bother to stop by his office, because they already know it's a dead end street.

Well I was convinced it was a result of outsourcing jobs overseas and people falling into the welfare rolls and being desperate for money. Time to lock the medicine cabinet, Limbaugh is back in town...LOL.

I know there hasn't been a picture posted yet but why does every photo of a bank robber make it damn near impossible to identify the robber? In this time of amazing technology and HD cameras, you'd think the bank would be willing to upgrade this part of theire security so, in case something does happen, someone might be able to identify the robber from the photo.
By itsamazing (222), Southampton on Sep 11, 12 12:17 AM
He was a Mormon. One can tell by the fact that absolutely no physical description was provided so that unflattering stereotypes wouldn't be perpetuated.

Residents and businesses are advised to notify the police if they come in contact with anyone matching the description.

Nice try Hat, but news 12 has released the surveillance pictures and now the press will be forced too as well, It looks like one of the new residents from the welfare motel we have seen walking around town lately, but nice try . They have ruined are town in one single action. No town should have to absorb this many section 8 residents all at once it truly has destroyed our peaceful hamlet.

Kidding no! about what? Have you been reading the news lately for East Quogue and HB? Robberies, fights now holdups,What have these politicians done to this nice community! Why should a working class family neighborhood be surprised one morning to learn we have been forced to absorb 60 Section 8 shelter units. Are YOU kidding. These people did not work there why into this neighborhood by hard work they were crow bared in here under the radar in the dead of night. We never had these problems before ...more

So I guess you have called police to notify them that it may be a resident of the welfare motel? Or are you just guessing because of the person doesn't fit the typical "hamptons" look?
By Nature (2966), Hampton Bays on Sep 11, 12 9:09 AM
Btw - what would you characterize the motel BEFORE the County took it over? Was it filled with Hamptons vacationers? Happy families who did no wrong? The police were NEVER called to that motel before the County came along - right?
By Nature (2966), Hampton Bays on Sep 11, 12 9:10 AM
It was mostly working class guys, their service trucks filled the lot. In the morning the lot emptied. I never saw anyone of them loitering in the middle of the road causing traffic to drive around them. I never saw their teenage kids wandering around the streets during school hours. I never saw them trepassing on private property and throwing parties and leaving trash everywhere. I have been out here and I never locked my doors...until now. The residents of this neighborhood have had enough. We ...more

They should implement a law they have in Florida. One cannot enter a bank there with a hat on and wearing sunglasses. It may not cut down on the robberies but you will definitely get a better picture.

I get what you're saying... but do you think a Bank Robber would tihnk, "Oh, better take off my hat and glasses, I wouldn't want to break any rules"

If you come in a Fl. bank wearing a hat and or sunglasses you get a stern warning at the door and they are not to quiet about it. It definitely draws attention. Not something a bank robber wants.
By Tuckahoe Ted (53), southampton on Sep 11, 12 1:14 PM
Can't find anyting regarding that "law" in florida via google. It seems that some banks have it as a policy but that's not the same thing.
By Nature (2966), Hampton Bays on Sep 11, 12 2:31 PM
I stand corrected. It is a bank's policy not law in Florida. It makes a lot of sense non the less. http://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2008/01/21/daily1.html

That's what happen when Southamptons not in charge . Southampton keeps it a secret FBI learned with most govt agencies share with the people and you will get results.
By Remsen (68), Southampton on Sep 11, 12 12:16 PM
Well said, goldenrod. How easily we forget, now over 2 months since Sister Walsh was abandoned and left to die on the side of the road. No updates from the authorities.

No urgency by the Press to "press" Chief Wilson for a statement.

RIP Sister Walsh.

I'm glad Hampton Bays is going in the right direction. There are about five Big Mouths in Hampton Bays that continue to say no to every project. You would think they represent the whole town. They fought McDonalds which is thriving. They fought 7 11 which is used by most citizens, and they delayed stop and shop for a decade. The town needs to let commercial projectstbegin to lower the tax base, and too put a new face on the village. Hampton Bays has the best waterfront in the Hampton and most potential ...more
