A Hampton Bays woman was arrested on Saturday evening after Southampton Town Police said she drove drunk, struck and injured a pet dog on a leash, and fled the scene.
Eileen F. Egan, 66, hit a dog being walked by its owner while heading westbound on Neptune Avenue in Hampton Bays and left the scene in her white 2005 Cadillac STS, police said. She was caught a short time later, at 4:20 p.m. on Saturday, near her Beth Lane home, where officers said they found her stopped in her car with the engine running in drive, but in a pile of leaves.
Ms. Egan was charged with aggravated DWI—a misdemeanor indicating a BAC of 0.18 or greater—plus leaving the scene of an incident, failure to maintain lane and failure to wear a seat belt, all infractions.
The dog, which suffered a leg injury, was taken to a veterinary clinic by its owner. It was expected to survive.
Ms. Egan was released on her own recognizance at a Sunday morning arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court. She was due back in court on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Her attorney is Barry Feldman.
