author on Jan 11, 2016

James Dubrowsky of Hampton Bays died on January 8 at Southampton Hospital. He was 83. “Big Jim,” as he was known by friends and family, was diagnosed with lung cancer this past summer and suffered a fatal heart attack at home while sitting in his favorite recliner chair near the end of his radiation and chemo treatments.

Born April 16, 1932, in New York City, he was the son of Egnatz and Edna Dubrowsky. His family moved to Long Island and he was raised in Hempstead, graduating Hempstead High School in 1950. The family then moved to Uniondale. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served at Mitchell Field during the Korean War.

His family owned and ran Club Jericho in Mineola from the 1950s through the 1970s. After selling the business, he spent the rest of his years developing and managing his real estate holdings.

On November 16, 1958, he married Josephine F. Podsiadlo of Farmingdale. They were happily married for 57 years and had four children and the family lived in Hicksville, Westbury, Farmingdale and Hampton Bays. Survivors said Mr. Dubrowsky was a devoted husband and father who cared deeply about his family.

In the 1960s, they built a summer home in Hampton Bays and then moved there full time around 1990. Mr. Dubrowsky enjoyed playing golf, boating and fishing. He owned a boat for many years called the Hustler, which docked at Hub’s Marina, and Jackson’s and then Indian Cove.

They also owned a second home in Jensen Beach, Florida, for the past 25 years where he and his wife enjoyed playing golf and relaxing in the sun during many winters.

In addition to his wife Josephine, Mr. Dubrowsky is survived by his four children, Jim Dubrowsky Jr. of Hampton Bays, Michael Dubrowsky of Hampton Bays, Nancy Donnangelo of Florida and Lori Warnokowski of Islip; 10 grandchildren, Carolann Dubrowsky, Courtney Dubrowsky, Christine Dubrowsky, Jesse Dubrowsky, Alec Dubrowsky all of Hampton Bays, and Kristen Warnokowski, Katie Warnokowski and Gregory Warnokowski of Islip, and Lauren Donnangelo and Andrew Donnangelo of Florida. He is also survived by two sisters, Violet Desch and Jeannette Nimmo, both of Hampton Bays and Florida.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A funeral Mass was held on January 13 at the Church of St. Rosalie in Hampton Bays. His ashes will be interred at a later date.
