Hampton Bays Architectural Design Competition Entries On Display

author on Jun 19, 2017

Entries for a residential design competition to build new homes on a 2.2-acre Hampton Bays property that overlooks Shinnecock Bay are on display at the Hampton Bays Public Library through June 25 for public viewing and voting, before the jury announces the winning entry.

Chiffert Engineering P.C., a Southampton-based architectural firm and host of the competition, fielded design entries from a spectrum of talent: Hampton Bays High School students to engineering undergraduates to seasoned East End architects.

In their drafts, contestants designed two single-family residences to be built on adjacent lots on the site. While many participants opted for contemporary, flat-roofed models, more traditional, shingle-style proposals have been submitted as well.

Marc Chiffert, the president of the firm and coordinator of the competition, modeled the contest on the architectural culture of France, where he ran an office for 12 years and where design competitions are much more popular. Traditionally, first-place winners secure the job, while second-and third-place winners are compensated with smaller prizes.

In order to spark creativity and “out-of-the-box thinking,” Mr. Chiffert employed a similar tactic with this Hampton Bays property, located at 1 Oceanview Road, just off Montauk Highway.

The winner will receive $1,800 and a three-day weekend for two in Hampton Bays. And, of course, the winning design will be used for the buildings’ construction.

Ultimately, the winner will be decided by a seven-member jury, but the public vote will be taken into consideration.

A cocktail party, at which the winner will be announced, will be held on Thursday, June 29, at 6 p.m. at Century 21 Agawam Town & Village Realty in Southampton Village. RSVP at oceanviewcompetition.com/rsvp.

As National Safe Digging Month begins, PSEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators that the law requires them to call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, resulting in repair costs and fines, PSEG stated in an announcement this week. Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. The call is free and the mark-out service is free.
