George Paul Tetzel of Hampton Bays died January 20, 2018, at home, after a long illness. He was 90.
Born in New York City in 1927, Mr. Tetzel was a veteran of World War II. He returned home and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia University. He worked in the publishing business at D. Appleton & Company.
Mr. Tetzel built a summer home in the Red Creek area of Hampton Bays in 1960, and in the 1970s, he left his position at Appleton to live in Hampton Bays full time, and established the antique and collectible store “Ada’s Attic” with Robert Scott Jones Jr. The Town of Southampton has since acquired this site, restoring the building as the historic landmark, known as the Prosper King House, under the stewardship of the Hampton Bays Historical & Preservation Society.
His parents were the late George Tetzel, an illustrator for The Daily News, and Sarah McPhee Tetzel. His partner, Robert Scott Jones; sister Joan and husband Oscar Homolka; brothers Jack and Robert, all predeceased him. He is survived by sister-in-law Ulla Tetzel; niece Brigitta Grimm and husband Richard and their daughters Allison, Katrina and Kyle LaVoie, and their son Grayson. He is also survived by Shinnecock Hills residents Ulf Skogsbergh and Hope Sandrow.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the R.J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A funeral was scheduled for January 23 at the Church of St. Rosalie and burial at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
