Evelyn A. Roll of Hampton Bays died on March 21, 2018. She was 98.
Evelyn (Black) was born October 15, 1919, in Greenpoint and, later, as a young teenager moved to Rego Park (known then as Annadale Park) in Queens. She went to Newtown High School and was an executive secretary in Manhattan. She was always volunteering and worked many years at the Foundling Hospital in New York City, the Altar Society at Our Lady of the Angelus Church, the American Cancer Society, and, after retirement to Hampton Bays, for the Dominican Sisters Thrift shop.
Survivors said she was always thinking of others. Her first words after saying hello were always to ask “how are you,” and then ask the same about everyone else important in your life.
She always had a smile on her face and loved to read, draw and paint, garden, golf and travel.
After her husband, Charles Robert Roll, died she and her brother, Jim, traveled the world extensively from fishing for marlin in Mexico, to golfing in Upstate New York, to visiting the Vatican.
Mrs. Roll is survived by her daughter, Janet Weiner and husband Michael; son Douglas Roll; and daughters-in-law, Francine D’Amico and Ginger Roll. She was predeceased by her son, Charles Robert Roll Jr.; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, friends and neighbors.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. A funeral Mass was held at the Church of St. Rosalie and burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Queens.
