Anthony “Tony” Capone, longtime resident of Hampton Bays, died on August 15, 2018, at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care on Quiogue. He was 96.
After graduating from Hampton Bays High School, he attended Boston University for two years before enlisting in the Army Air Force and serving during World War II. He was a decorated radio operator and gunner. After his plane was shot down, he was taken prisoner of war for six months and endured the 86-day forced march across Germany before he was liberated.
After the war, he completed his studies at Boston University School of Music, and taught instrumental music in several Suffolk County public schools, ending at Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip. For several years, he played clarinet in the Huntington Symphony Orchestra; was a member of the Southampton Golf Club, an avid golfer and fisherman, amateur radio operator, accomplished photographer and creative videographer. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Milemore; his brother, Jack Capone; his sisters, Josephine Horning and Theresa Francolini (Eugene); many nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Daniel and Andrew.
In accordance with his wishes, there was no funeral gathering; his body was donated to the Stony Brook School of Medicine.
