The Hampton Bays boys tennis team won four of its last five matches of the regular season, with four of those victories coming in League VIII play, to finish with an even 5-5 record. For some programs, that may not mean much, but for the Baymen, who just last season struggled to field a full team, it’s a big step in the right direction.

Hampton Bays started its strong finish with a 6-1 victory at Riverhead on April 2, then defeated host Eastport/South Manor, 4-3, on April 6. After a 5-2 non-league loss at home to William Floyd on April 9, the Baymen rebounded with a 5-2 victory at home over Center Moriches on Thursday, April 11, then defeated Riverhead, 7-0, at home the following day.

Hampton Bays head coach Diana Vamvakitis said having seven freshmen and a sophomore join the team this season certainly helped the team’s depth.

“We are a young team with many novice players who are dedicated and enthusiastic about tennis,” she said. “Each player on our team is very committed, motivated, and determined to not only grow as individual players, but improve as a team. The team has been working hard at practice and showing their determination to win during matches.”

Vamvakitis is hoping to have her top three singles players compete in the Division IV Tournament, which doesn’t begin until next month, on May 3 at Shoreham/Wading River High School. The team’s lone senior, Patricio Pulla, has won six matches as the team’s first singles player, while sophomore Jeremy Carcamo has won all 10 of his matches at second singles and freshman Noah Sanabria won all of his matches at third singles.
