Maryalice Lee Schurek died at home in Hampton Bays on September 24, 2019. She was 92.
Mrs. Schurek was born in New York City on September 22, 1927, to Michael and Catherine Lee. After graduating from Hunter College High School, she left her educational pursuits to work for American Telephone and Telegraph in order to support her ailing mother and younger siblings, John, Catherine Jane, Daniel and Ann Cecile. On May 20, 1950, she married Lawrence Schurek and together they raised eight children, as well as Maryalice’s youngest sister, Ann Cecile.
The family resided in the Bronx and later moved to Hampton Bays. Mrs. Schurek worked and retired from the Hampton Bays School District as a remedial reading teacher.
Despite her busy role raising a large family, she found the time to volunteer and work in many community and church groups. She was active in the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, the PTA and the Holy Rosary Altar Society. She was a member of the Riverhead chapter of the WOTM and the Pioneers. For many years she served as a Eucharistic minister and food pantry volunteer at St. Rosalie’s Church, even as her health began to fail. She was one of the creators of the website, masstimes.org (mass near me) and sang in St. Rosalie’s choir, which she very much enjoyed, family said.
Mrs. Schurek was predeceased by her husband, Larry; and daughter Laura. She is survived by seven children, Michael, Barbara, Noreen, Joanne, Lawrence, Kathryn, Kevin; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Ann Cecile Carney; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the R. J. O’Shea Funeral Home in Hampton Bays.
