Driver Flees Accident, Drives With Hood Upright Past Hampton Bays Carnival

Aug 6, 2014 9:45 AM

A 24-year-old Hampton Bays man was transported to Southampton Hospital with minor injuries last week—and later charged with DWI—after authorities said he attempted to flee an accident that occurred in front of the Hampton Bays Diner on Montauk Highway.

Southampton Town Police said Johnathan Nieto-Carrillo hit another vehicle with his Volkswagen near the diner at around 9:15 p.m. last Wednesday, July 30, and then sped off eastbound on Montauk Highway. The hood of his car flew up after the collision, and Mr. Nieto-Carrillo was stopped near Good Ground Road, close to where the Hampton Bays Fire Department was hosting its annual carnival, according to Southampton Town Police Sergeant Susan Ralph.

Mr. Nieto-Carrillo was transported to the hospital by the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance with undisclosed injuries and later charged with DWI, a misdemeanor, as well as leaving the scene of an accident, a violation, police said.

Sgt. Ralph said she did not know how many people were in the vehicle that was struck by Mr. Nieto-Carrillo. However, police said they suffered minor injuries and were transported to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment.

Those attending the Hampton Bays Fire Department carnival, which was being held about a half-mile east of the diner, reported seeing the car driving with its hood up and rear bumper dragging along the pavement.

Representatives of the fire department did not return requests this week seeking comment.

I happened to be pumping gas right across the street when this accident occurred. I saw this genius take off with his hood up - the car was disabled and probably going only 15-20 mph at the time. I think it's hilarious that he drove RIGHT TOWARDS THE CARNIVAL where there were 100 cops instead of going up 24. Hilarious!

I want to applaud all the volunteer fireman who often risk their lives and have to disrupt family gatherings to,answer the call of duty. As the mother of one and the grandmother of another, I think they deserve our highest praise

Your completely unsolicited and sanctimonious praise within an unrelated article means SO much more to everyone because you are a mother and grandmother. Thank god you've had children! Thank you!
