Another small plane overshoots runway at Montauk Airport

Apr 7, 2010 9:00 AM

A single-engine Cessna airplane overshot the runway at Montauk Airport while attempting to make a landing on Saturday shortly before 6 p.m. After running off the runway, the plane broke through a fence and came to a stop on East Lake Drive.

The pilot, who was alone in the plane, was not injured. Montauk firefighters responded to the scene and sprayed flame-retardant foam on the wreckage.

This was the third accident at the small airport in the past year. Last fall, a plane overshot the runway, and in March 2009, a pilot and his instructor escaped injury when their plane burned after a crash landing at the strip.

Editor: What's with the clearly outdated/incorrect photo? I believe this was used in another recent article about a plane going off the runway. It would be beneficial (and honest) to give an explanation of this photo (same plane model perhaps?) otherwise it's quite misleading and is unprofessional. I expect better from this paper. Thank you.

After further review the article states that it was flame retardant spray. My apologies - I still think there should be a description under the photo though.

Maybe the proper thing to do is to "further review the article" before posting. Given the terribly long length of the story I can understand your not reading it through.

We "expect better" from the comments...

What does "spelldt check" have to do with the plane crash in a snowstorm?

Most firemen would know that was AFFF (aqueous film forming foam), but, it does look like a patch of ice, doesn't it?

Maybe it's not luck, maybe it's a karmic warning regarding his excessive lifestyle.

The third time, he may not be so lucky.

Homes in Manhattan, AND East Hampton, eh?
