LIRR service suspended on the East End Friday

Sep 2, 2010 6:43 PM

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced it will suspend Long Island Rail Road service to the East End Friday in anticipation of severe winds, heavy rains and flooding due to Hurricane Earl passing of the coast of Long Island.

According to the agency’s website, service will be suspended east of Speonk on the LIRR’s Montauk branch in light of the Category 4 storm. It will also suspend service east of Ronkonkoma on the Ronkonkoma branch, which ends at Greenport.

The last eastbound train en route to Montauk will leave Penn Station at 12:39 a.m. early Friday morning and arrive at Montauk at 3:57 a.m. The last westbound train will leave Montauk at 5:39 a.m. and arrive at Penn Station at 8:42 a.m. on Friday. Westbound trains from Speonk and Ronkonkoma will be running on a normal schedule.

The agency said its goal is to resume full service on Saturday morning.

So basically the east end is losing out on the 1 to 2 trains it normally runs?

Actually, there are 9 trains cancelled for Friday.

ok os i was off by 7. my point being that it really doesnt matter because anyone who uses the LIRR past Speonk always has a plan b. the service is just as pathetic as their performance.

For something I CONTRIBUTE TO OUT OF MY PAYCHECK. I EXPECT IT TO RUN EVERY DAY. DO I GET A DAYS REFUND ON MY MONTHLY FOR SERVICE NOT PROVIDED? is the mta tax adjusted for me for all the late and cancelled trains?

There is clearly more than "weather" behind this story. Politics? Budget wrangling? Ridiculous. MTA ought to be ashamed of itself.

Once again what a total joke the LIRR is.
To cancel the entire day is overkill to say the least.
Needless to say the Jitneys are running.

The LIRR is such a joke. They're worse than a bunch of 3 year olds. Grow up and do your job. Your motto "we serve with pride" who are you kidding!

It is definitely overkill, but the reasoning is that they rather cancel service than have hundreds of people stuck on trains or platforms due to high water or down trees. The storm looks like a dud so far, but they rather be safe than sorry.

high water and down trees happen on all branches of the LIRR. when it rains bayside floods, area outside the penn tunnels floods. trees and branches come down all along the mainline.

the LIRR has a very poor track record in inclement weather. 9 times out of 10 my train is delayed or broken when it rains

I was going out east one time a few years ago on the LIRR. The train broke down and was stuck between sayville and patchogue for about 3 hours. The MTA Police almost arrested me for smoking a cigarette between the cars while I, along with the other passengers were kidnapped and imprisioned on the train. It was Summertime with no a/c let me add.... Also the guy Bob on the night train to montauk (jamaica 1:03, montauk 3:57) which also returns to the city (montauk 5:30ish) is a complete loser. ...more
