The Montauk home that belonged to E. Virgil Conway, the former Metropolitan Transportation Authority chairman, has been put up for sale for $8.75 million. Born and raised in Montauk, Mr. Conway died in October at the age of 86.
Built in 1967, the 2,250-square-foot contemporary is located on Oceanview Terrace and features four bedrooms, 4.5 baths, a fireplace and a two-car garage, according to the listing with Corcoran. The property also has a swimming pool and 90 feet of beach frontage, and is within walking distance of downtown Montauk.
Mr. Conway had deep roots in the Montauk community and was known for providing support to several organizations in the hamlet, including the Montauk Community Church, where he was a lifetime member, as well as the Montauk Medical Center and the Montauk Lighthouse. Professionally, he is remembered as the chairman of the MTA from 1995 to 2001. In that role, he oversaw capital programs that opened the door for such projects as the Second Avenue subway, East Side Access and the 7 train extension to Manhattan's Far West Side. He also oversaw the creation and implementation of the MTA's MetroCard.
