Montauk Coast Guard Senior Chief Eric Best, officer in charge of the local station, said that a Coast Guard ship has left the scene near Gardiners Island after extinguishing a fire that started on a recreational boat earlier today. Mr. Best said that the boat sank in the water.

The Montauk Coast Guard responded to a boat fire off the coast of Gardiners Island on Friday afternoon.
According to Senior Chief Eric Best, officer in charge of the Coast Guard Montauk station, a 20-foot recreational boat caught fire sometime after 2 p.m. south of Gardiners Island and to the west of the nearby Cartwright shoal.
Mr. Best said that three people were on board the vessel before abandoning it and being taken safely to Accabonac Harbor by a nearby civilian boat. The Coast Guard remained at the scene to extinguish the fire.
