East Hampton considering borrowing to cover deficit

Most important in the borrowing proposal would be for the town to get a handle on its spending, he said. Years of rising spending and nearly flat tax rates led to the deficit, he added, and the trend will have to be reversed if the deficit is to be pared down and surplus rebuilt.

“I think everybody needs to realize that the town is spread way too thin,” Mr. Hammerle said. “If you want to minimize costs to the taxpayer, we have to take a hard look at ways to cut back in a lot of places.”
