Linni S. Deihl of Quogue died on September 11, 2017, with her daughter, Jessica, and dog, Piper, by her side. She was 76.
Born in Stamford, Connecticut, on October 31, 1940 to Nathan B. Silberman, Esq., and Dorothy Silberman. She attended the Professional Children’s School in New York City, so that she could dance with the New York City Ballet from the age of 13. She left the ballet to attend Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, graduated with the Class of 1962, and went on to get a master’s degree and a master’s in education from Columbia University.
Ms. Deihl held private psychotherapy practices in Manhattan and Quogue for more than 40 years. She has also been registered as a dance therapist and a member of the American Dance Therapy Association since 1972, earning numerous awards, including the 2007 Excellence in Education Award, 2016 Exceptional Service Award and the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award. She has published many books and articles, including her most recent, “Profiles of Second Generation Dance/Movement Therapists” in 2016. She taught dance therapy courses all over the world and took great pride in the students she helped guide into the profession along the way. She had also taught dance education at numerous institutions across Long Island and found her work with special needs children, particularly autistic children, most rewarding. She loved choreographing the liturgical dancers at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church, singing in the choir, and leading the church in international peacemaking initiatives such as yearly seminars at the United Nations and bringing in speakers from Afghanistan, Syria, and Serbia among others.
A funeral service will be held at the Quogue Chapel on Sunday, September 24, at 4:30 p.m. to be followed by the scattering of ashes in the memorial garden at the Westhampton Presbyterian Church and reception there to follow.
