An early spring is in store for the Village of Quogue.

Much to the delight of at least a dozen community members, Brian, a rehabilitated groundhog from Save the Animals Rescue Foundation in Middle Island, did not see his shadow at the Quogue Public Library’s first Groundhog Day celebration on Friday morning.

If Brian had seen his shadow, the tradition goes, there would have been six more weeks of winter. Because he didn’t, spring should be just around the corner.

“I’m very happy about the prediction,” Lonna Theiling, the library’s director said immediately following Brian’s prediction. “I’m looking forward to spring.”

Others agreed.

“I’m very happy, it’s been a rough winter,” East Quogue resident Pat Behr said.

“This is exactly what I wanted,” added Selina Pasca, the adult programming coordinator at the library, and the coordinator of the first Groundhog Day event. “I would like to call Brian my new best friend.”

Though Brian did not leave his handler Katherine Schelp’s arms––he recently suffered brain damage from a parasite treated by the STAR Foundation––he “whispered” his prediction to Ms. Pasca who then relayed the message to Quogue Village Fire Chief Chris Osborne, who announced Brian’s prognosis.

“I love starting new traditions and bringing the community together,” Ms. Pasca said. “I hope this is the start of many traditions.”

The library plans to hold a Groundhog Day celebration every year, and Brian may become Quogue’s newest celebrity.

“I am so happy that Brian was able to come,” Ms. Pasca said. “If Brian would like to come again, we would love to have him.”
