Carolyn Helen Young Dettmer of Winter Park, Florida, a longtime resident of Quogue, died on February 7.
Born to Claire and Jack Young of New York, Ms. Dettmer was a graduate of Queens College and received a master’s degree in education at Southampton College. She was an art and kindergarten teacher at Quogue School, a special education teacher at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services, a preschool teacher in Battery Park City, and a teen pregnancy prevention educator at Suffolk Network on Adolescent Pregnancy (SNAP), as well as a published poet.
Ms. Dettmer was predeceased by her husband, William H. Dettmer III. She is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Dettmer, Samantha Dettmer and Elisa Jacobs; sons-in-law, Robert Shamble and Samuel Jacobs; four grandchildren, Eleanor and Amelia Shamble and Olivia and Henry Jacobs; and a brother, Richard Young and wife Barbara.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends during the summer.
