Three people were injured on Sunday morning when two pickup trucks collided in Speonk, ejecting two people from different vehicles.
The Eastport Fire Department responded to the intersection of Montauk Highway and Wysteria Drive at 11:31 a.m. on Sunday and found that both drivers, who had been thrown from the two vehicles in the head-on collision, were already being treated by paramedics.
The accident happened when a 2011 Ford pickup and a 2000 GMC pickup collided on Montauk Highway.
One truck was found in the westbound lane facing south, with utility wires resting on the vehicle. A nearby utility pole was broken off at the base, and wires lay across the roadway. The second pickup truck was found 100 feet west of the first vehicle, having traveled along the sidewalk, breaking off a fire hydrant, and coming to rest in the westbound lane. Both vehicles had significant front-end damage.
Both drivers were treated at the scene by the Westhampton War Memorial Ambulance before being transferred to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The third victim was transported to Brookhaven Hospital by the East Moriches Community Ambulance. Southampton Town Police could not comment on the extent of the injuries.
Firefighters disabled the electrical systems on both vehicles, cleaned up spilled fluids and directed traffic around the area for approximately one hour. Thirty-three firefighters responded with one heavy rescue unit, two pumpers and two traffic control vehicles.
Southampton Town Police could not share any other information this week.
