Not many people see the hood of an old car and envision a curvy mermaid.
But Kyle Pearce does.
This week, the Bethpage native—who now lives on a sailboat on the Anclote River in Florida—installed a collection of his whimsical, large-scale metal animals and creatures in the Sculpture Garden at the Remsenburg Academy, just in time for the art season opening on Friday, May 16.
Over the last 30 years, the artist has brought car hoods to life using a hammer, pliers and an acetylene torch, from giraffes and cows to rhinos and mermaids.
Prices vary from piece to piece, though admission to the exhibition is free.
