Surrounded by multimillion-dollar listings, we occasionally like to see what new East End homes have hit the market that we plebes could afford. This quest can lead us to the oddly shaped or the shanty, but often it leads us to the charming. Here are three abodes that fall into the latter category. What would you do, tear them down or move in?
Who’s a cute little cottage? Oh, yes you are. Yes, you … ahem, excuse us. Small, red cottages turn us into doting parents. Sure, this one’s a little dated, but the wood-paneled, cabin-y feel reminds us of a bygone era, when times were simpler, and vacation really meant disconnecting from your regular life and getting away. The 3-bedroom, 1.5-bath home sits on one-third of an acre in Sag Harbor’s Wickatuck Hills. Since it’s only 624 square feet, the price tag is rather steep for our taste, but not unheard of out here. Plus, it’s two blocks from Long Beach and a bike ride from the village, so the value is clearly in its location. [HRE0: IN #47405]
Peering over watersides or tucked away in the woods, the contemporary saltbox style is a fixture on the East End. We like this weathered 3-bed, 2-bath home, because it marries old with new. Outside, this house has seen some things, but inside it’s bright with what we hope are fresh coats of paint. Sitting on .46 acre, it’s located just up the street from a marina, about 2 miles from East Hampton Village. There’s an eat-in kitchen, an open living and dining area, and a large back deck that, in some places, was built around trees. How can you not like a house whose owners considered their tree neighbors when building? Apparently, we're not the only ones who like it. It recently went into contract! [HREO: IN #43867]
It’s green with a cobblestone chimney. Need we say more? This 1,400-square-foot East Quogue cottage has a more modern interior design than one would first think. With 2 beds and 2.5 baths, it has custom moldings and hardwood floors, plus a gourmet kitchen and a wood-burning fireplace. But it looks like the best part is outside, with its heated saltwater pool, waterfall and a patio featuring a bar! You’ll be everyone’s best friend whether you like it or not. [HREO: IN #18056]
