When a Sag Harbor man went into cardiac arrest in his sleep early Friday morning, what happened next was such a swift CPR “chain of survival” that he was alive to celebrate his 34th wedding anniversary with his wife two days later.

Diane Crawford was sound asleep in her Widgeon Lane home in the Mount Misery neighborhood after flying back home that evening from a trip to Disney World, when she was awakened at about 1:40 a.m. by her husband William’s “terrible, erratic breathing,” she said Tuesday morning from Stony Brook University Medical Center, where her husband is now recovering.

“I screamed out, ‘Daddy’s dying!’” she recalled, explaining that the exclamation was intended to get the attention of her 27-year-old son, Daniel, who was upstairs.

Ms. Crawford, 58, wasted no time, however.

Quality CPR can be a lifesaver as illustrated by this event. It needs to begin as quickly as possible, be of high quality (ie good chest compressions to assist perfusion, especially in combination with assisted respirations and ALS interventions) and continuous except when administering shock via AED. Kudos to Mrs. Crawford, the SHPD and Sag Harbor Ambulance volunteers.
