Vincent Francis Alioto Jr. Dies June 23

Vincent F. Alioto Jr. of Sag Harbor died June 23. He was 87.

Born January 7, 1929, in Sag Harbor to Vincent and Pauline Alioto, he served two years in the United States Army Headquarters Company 4th Division Germany on a demolition team and in the Reserves until honorably discharged in 1957. He was a founding member of VFW Post 9082 in Sag Harbor and was a member of Chelberg & Battle American Legion Auxiliary Post 388 and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Alioto worked selling food at The Shack on Long Beach in his teenage years, as the produce manager at Bohacks in Sag Harbor, as a police officer in the East Hampton Police Department, and as chief of security and maintenance at the former Todd Nursing Home in Southampton, before he retired in 1994.

He was also a volunteer for the Southampton Veterans Memorial Ambulance for many years. As owner of his own private security business, Mr. Alioto was asked by playwright Arthur Miller to teach him how to handle and use a handgun, which then led to teaching Miller’s then wife Marilyn Monroe how to use her gardening tools correctly. Mr. Alioto was known for his delicious varieties of canned pickles, made from cucumbers grown in one of his two gardens.

Mr. Alioto was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Alioto; a son, Vincent III; a brother, James; and his first wife, Adele Butler Alioto.

He is survived by two daughters, Fran and Sue Alioto; stepchildren, John, Rosemary, and Timothy Griffin; grandchildren, Emily Lopez and husband Sergio, Jennifer Phillips and husband David, Hannah Gonzalez, Deirdre White, Sean, Michaela, and Erin Griffin; great-grandchild, Mason Gonzalez; and a niece, Colleen VanGuilder and husband Cliff and family.

A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Sag Harbor on Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m.
