Early on, it had the look of what was going to be a game.

Then Southold starting pitcher Dylan Clausen settled in.

After giving up a lead-off double to James Sherry, who eventually reached third base in the top of the first inning, Clausen got himself out of the jam and allowed two hits the rest of the game while striking out 10, leading the Settlers to a 7-0 victory over the Pierson/Bridgehampton baseball team in the opening game of the Suffolk County Class C Championship on Monday in Southold.

Game two of the best-of-three series will be played Tuesday at Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor at 4 p.m. Pierson head coach Sean Crowley is eager to see how his team fares on its home field with a home crowd. Sherry will be getting the starting nod and will try and force a third game for the Whalers, Crowley announced after the game. On May 4, Sherry allowed two runs, one earned, in a 2-0 loss at home to the Settlers.
