The volunteer job of a standard bearer at any golf event isn't exactly an easy task. Lugging around a scorecard, or standard, that stands four to five feet tall that lists individual players' scores for up to five hours on what could be hot days is really not for the faint of heart.

Cooper Schiavoni is looking forward to it though.

Having just about wrapped up his junior year at Pierson High School, Schiavoni is set to start his job as standard bearer on Thursday and will continue it in the second round on Friday for the 118th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The Sag Harbor native will be joined by fellow Noyac Golf Club caddy Timmy Facciola, who is from Westchester but summers on the East End.

Schiavoni said that Noyac head pro Dave Gosiewski had some volunteer sheets at the club, so he filled them out and eventually got word that he landed the job of standard bearer.

"I'm going to be carrying around scoreboards for three guys in a group and walking with them, changing the scores for them," he explained next to the putting green at Shinnecock Hills on Wednesday. "This is my first time doing it, but I was excited when I saw I was coming here because I've been wanting to get a chance to do it."

Schiavoni—a three-sport athlete, playing baseball, basketball and golf— was enjoying his time on Wednesday with teammates from Pierson's boys golf team, including head coach Clint Schulman. Starting Thursday, though, when first-round action gets under way, Schiavoni will get to work, but he'll be sure to take everything in, including watching some of the best golf the world has to offer.

"I get to see [the golfers] up close, inside the ropes, and really see their skill level and see how insanely good they are at this game," he said. "It's supposed to be 75 and sunny the rest of the week so we'll see how it goes."
