UPDATE: 5:09 P.M.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, Brian France announced he will be taking "an indefinite leave of absence" from his position as chairman and CEO of NASCAR "effective immediately" after being arrested in Sag Harbor Sunday night. Mr. France added in his statement that his leave will be to focus on his "personal affairs."

“I apologize to our fans, our industry and my family for the impact of my actions last night," Mr. France said in his statement.

NASCAR issued an addition statement announcing that Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Jim France has taken over as interim chairman and CEO.

NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France was arrested by Sag Harbor Village Police Sunday night at about 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Wharf Street and faces DWI and drug charges.

According to police, Mr. France was driving north on Main Street when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign. When police pulled him over, it was determined that he was intoxicated. Police then found oxycodone pills on his person.

Mr. France was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, both misdemeanors. He was processed and held at police headquarters overnight until his arraignment Monday morning. Mr. France was arraigned at Sag Harbor Village Justice Court Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. and was released on his own recognizance.

In response to a request for comment, NASCAR issued the following statement via email on Monday: “We are aware of an incident that occurred last night and are in the process of gathering information. We take this as a serious matter and will issue a statement after we have all of the facts.”
