Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor will present a free reading of “A Christmas Carol” on Thursday, December 20, at 7 p.m., followed by a holiday sing-along.
The 1843 Charles Dickens classic is the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, an old miser who has a change of heart after being visited by the ghost of his old business partner and the three Ghosts of Christmas on Christmas Eve.
The reading will star just four actors: Amanda Kristin Nichols and John Kroft from Bay Street’s recent “The Great Gatsby,” Harris Yulin, who played Richard Nixon in Bay Street’s “Frost/Nixon,” and Paul Hecht, of Broadway and the silver screen.
Mr. Hecht and Bay Street Theater Associate Artistic Director Will Pomerantz (director of Bay Street’s “Evita”) adapted the script. It includes live sound effects and, according to Bay Street, is based on the version that Dickens himself performed as he toured the world.
“The interesting thing about casting for this,” Mr. Pomerantz said in a press release, “is that each of the four actors will take a turn playing Scrooge as well as serving as narrator for one of the sections of the story. So, there is a sort of ‘tag-team’ Scrooging that goes on, which I think will be interesting and fun for the audience and the actors.”
Sag Harbor composer and musician Dan Koontz will perform live music during the reading. Caroling and eggnog will follow in the lobby.
