I call chickens slow moving 
rototillers. If you need a scraggly piece of ground tamed, put a coop out there. Over time, the chickens will turn or pulverize anything in their proximal vicinity. Woodpiles, compost heaps, weeds, old buildings, all will eventually be leveled by the occupational habits of the flock.

Three years ago, when my neighbors decided to get chickens, I warned them that this meant someone had to be on the premises. Chickens are a responsibility, day and night, and the occasional predator 
must be deterred (and can be so deterred only by your protests).

Chickens are generally found on farms, because farms are a safe operating environment for them and there is always someone there to do chores. 
Estates can emulate this pattern if they want. The chicks arrived... more
