Snow flurried across the Tuckahoe School grounds last Thursday, January 19, but lettuce leaves were still sprouting in the school’s Community Garden, readying themselves to be picked for students’ salads.
The wonder of garden greens being available all winter long is something new for the Community Garden, and it comes courtesy of one Tuckahoe graduate’s Eagle Scout project.
Evan D. Scheuch, 16, a member of Boy Scout Troop 58, built six cold frames to protect the produce in the garden at his elementary school alma mater as his culminating effort in the quest to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts of America.
