Southampton Village lawmakers said this week that they plan to take a crucial first step toward making it possible for the village to exceed the new state-imposed tax levy cap as they draft their budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year this spring.
The Village Board on Tuesday evening introduced a local law that would give the mayor and four village trustees the authority to pierce the 2-percent tax ceiling adopted by the state last year.
Village Attorney Richard DePetris noted that adopting the law does not mean that the village will necessarily pierce the cap.
