Jane Pollicino
Jane Pollicino, the twin sister of Southampton resident Vicky Tureski, died on February 21 while vacationing in Cancun, Mexico. The Plainview resident was 59 years old and was a vocal advocate for families of 9/11 victims after her husband died in the World Trade Center attack.
Born in the Bronx, the family moved to Plainview when she was 12. After graduating from Plainview-Old Bethpage High School in 1971, she and her sister attended Nassau Community College. It was there that she met Steve Pollicino during her freshman year. They had been married 23 years when he was killed.
After two years at Nassau Community, she completed a bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo with a degree in art education. She worked for a time in the admissions office at New York Tech while also studying for a master’s in college counseling.
After her husband was killed, Mr. Pollicino volunteered at the Tribute WTC Visitor Center in Manhattan. In a Newsday story, she said that speaking about her husband on the tours of the center was a kind of therapy. She advocated for the proper recognition of those who were killed it the attacks and that the names of the victims be engraved at the memorial site. She was also involved in Tuesday’s Children, a group that supports and mentors children who lost a parent on 9/11.
In addition to her twin sister, Ms. Pollicino is survived by her parents, Beatrice and Michael Elefante of Plainview; a son, Steven and his wife Jenna of New Jersey; a daughter, Celeste of Manhattan; a sister Laraine Angeline and her husband Philip of East Setauket; a brother-in-law, Larry Tureski of Southampton; and a grandson, Nicholas. She is also survived by nieces, Michelle Angeline of Manhattan and Nicole Tureski of Southampton; nephews, Eric Tureski of Southampton and Philip Angeline of Brooklyn.
