A scholarship fundraiser in memory of a Hampton Bays Middle School special education teacher’s aide who died last June at age 30 will be held on Saturday night in Southampton Village.
The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at 230 Elm on Elm Street and includes hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar, live music and a DJ. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door.
Three friends of the late Heather N. Fitzgerald, a 2000 Southampton High School graduate, are hosting the fundraiser: Karen MacWhinnie, Kate Anderson and Meghan Bishop. They are also asking local businesses for donations.
The Heather Nikole Fitzgerald Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating Hampton Bays High School senior who plans to study special education.
Friends and family were shocked when Ms. Fitzgerald, a Hampton Bays resident, died on June 2, 2012. Seizure was listed as the cause of death on her death certificate.
Ms. Anderson, who graduated from high school with Ms. Fitzgerald, called her a loyal friend whose love for children extended beyond the classroom. “She was able to put a smile on everyone’s face with her outgoing personality,” she said.
Ms. MacWhinnie, a teacher assistant at Southampton Intermediate School, where Ms. Fitzgerald student taught, said her late friend was always there for any friend in need and was full of laughter and love. “This is the least we can do to honor Heather’s name,” she said. “She is greatly missed every day.”
Ms. Bishop, the daughter of U.S. Representative Tim Bishop, and another high school classmate of Ms. Fitzgerald, said her late friend loved teaching. “Doing a scholarship in her memory seemed the best way to carry on her legacy,” she said.
Donations may be sent to the Heather Fitzgerald Scholarship Fund, 86 East Argonne Road, Hampton Bays, NY 11946.
