Southampton Village Police Investigating Shooting; No Arrests Made Yet

Southampton Village Police Chief Thomas Cummings briefs the Village Board on Monday night's shooting. ALYSSA MELILLO

Southampton Village Police are investigating a drive-by shooting Monday night that sent three men to the hospital, with one remaining in critical condition.

According to police, the department received multiple calls about shots fired just before 6 p.m. near Hillcrest Avenue.

When police arrived on the scene, they were told that three men had been injured by shots fired from a shotgun that was “discharged from a vehicle into a crowd of people that were standing in the roadway,” village authorities said in a press release.

The three victims, who were not named, were taken to Southampton Hospital in private vehicles. One remains in the intensive care unit, another is still being treated for injuries, and the third was discharged, according to police.

As of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked call the Village Police Department at (631) 283-0056. All calls will be kept confidential, police said.

Detective Sergeant Herman Lamison said Tuesday that the department has a description of the vehicle where the shots came from, as well as descriptions of multiple suspects, but that he was “not at liberty” to release the information, as it could compromise the investigation.

“We’re still looking at suspects,” Det. Sgt. Lamison said. “There are multiple suspects at this point.”

Southampton Town Police are assisting with the investigation, as are State Police, which is the only police agency that has jurisdiction on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation.

While briefing the Southampton Village Board on Tuesday night about the incident, Village Police Chief Thomas Cummings said the shooting was the result of an “ongoing dispute” among the people involved.

“We have a pretty good idea of what happened. This wasn’t just a random event,” the chief told the board.

He added that Officer Michael Sinclair-Crotti was out in the field Monday night and heard the guns go off. “He actually passed [the vehicle the shots came from]. He didn’t realize,” Chief Cummings said.

At Tuesday evening’s meeting, Village Mayor Mark Epley commended the chief, as well as the Police Department, for their quick response to the shooting scene. “You made people feel safer with the situation,” the mayor said.

As a result of the shooting, all Southampton High School boys and girls varsity and junior varsity basketball games against Center Moriches High School on Tuesday evening were canceled, which district officials said was a precautionary measure. Southampton’s athletic director, Darren Phillips, said the games would be postponed until further notice.

“When Center Moriches played here back in December, there was an incident after the game,” Mr. Phillips said. “We just felt like for right now, for safety, we’d postpone [the games] until we find out more.”

Det. Sgt. Lamison, who is the head coach of Southampton’s varsity boys basketball team, said it was “a shame” that school officials were making a connection between the Center Moriches teams and the shooting—there is no connection, he said.

Chief Cummings agreed with Mr. Phillips that the cancellation was just a way to ensure the safety of the community. “I think that was just more not to have a large group of people getting together,” the chief said.

Because it's a personal, local gripe that resulted in a drive by/ shotgun attempted murder, you think there's no cause for alarm?
By elliot (251), sag harbor on Jan 27, 16 7:39 PM
Some people shot. No worries. No need for descriptions or names of suspects. Men up and vanished like a fart in the wind, it seems.

No names, no descriptions,no real information. Description of the suspects? How about the vehicle? Nope and we know why but don't worry, everything is fine, just keep watching the Kartrshians and stuffing your faces.

No description of the vehicle involved? No names of victims released? This information will help the police in finding the perps. Well not the PC police actually.

Seems to me we have the right as Americans to defend myself sorry if you don't like that
By widow gavits (219), sag harbor on Jan 27, 16 2:48 PM
So is it your point that the person doing the drive by was defending themselves?
By bird (793), Sag Harbor on Jan 27, 16 3:05 PM
...no names, pics or descriptions tells us who the perps aren't
By loading... (563), quiogue on Jan 27, 16 3:39 PM
None of the local press will describe the victims or assailants. Tell me there's nothing wrong with that picture. Is the SH Press afraid that the criminals will sue them?
By elliot (251), sag harbor on Jan 27, 16 7:42 PM
It is stated in the story that police will not release details about the victims and suspects.
By amelillo (5), Holtsville on Jan 28, 16 9:38 AM
Why do you think the local press knows anything beyond what the police say? The truth comes out in court. This isn't a TV show.
By fire11 (276), east hampton on Jan 27, 16 10:25 PM
The village cops are ticket writers. The cost of the police is a large part of the village budget, and becoming out of control.
We now have a shooting, and we find the state police are the lead investigators. Why do we need a 200k chief when he oversees a bunch of paper hangers.
By chief1 (2740), southampton on Jan 28, 16 7:32 AM
I agree chief, I don't think they'll ever solve this one. These baddies will probably be out there lurking and doing drive by's for the rest of our lives.
What a sad state of affairs
By adlkjd923ilifmac.aladfksdurwp (700), southampton on Jan 28, 16 7:49 AM
It's very sad that the Hill is going back to this state. Many sacrifice literally their lives and time revitalizing this community years ago from having a " bad" rep and to see the Hill gradually going in the wrong direction is quite disturbing. This use to be a unique community of great hard working families who looked out for each other a true example of " Community" (common unity) which many in the Village of SOUTHAMPTON have no clue how precious and special that is/was. There are still a few ...more

If the Troopers are involved it means that someone from the Rez is involved. There has been bad blood between the Hill and d Rez for years

Revenge and retaliation is sure to follow. It invariably escalates before it gets better. I'm sure that the State Police are all over this one
