Round one goes to the Mariners.
In a possible preview of the Suffolk County Class A finals, the Southampton boys basketball team defeated host Bayport/Blue Point, 72-68, last Thursday, January 5, giving the Mariners a leg up in the League VI title race. Coupled with a 77-38 victory at East Hampton on January 3, Southampton improved to 4-0 in league play to take sole possession of first place as of Tuesday morning.
Though pleased with his team’s most recent victory, Southampton head coach Herm Lamison this week tried to keep things in perspective for his players.
“I wouldn’t say that we’ve won anything at this stage of the game,” he said on Monday. “We’ve still got Glenn coming up and they beat Bayport over a week ago, so there’s still a journey to undertake. Bayport is by no means a pushover. There is some serious competition in our league.”
The Mariners trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter and did not earn their first lead until the third quarter, when their defense began to force turnovers.
Late in the fourth quarter, and with their team leading by a few points, senior Timmy Alejo made an almost full-court pass to sophomore Micah Snowden, who scored off a layup to solidify the lead for the Mariners.
Snowden finished with 28 points and 18 rebounds, senior Andre Franklin had 13 points and junior Elijah Wingfield finished with 11. Though he did not light up the scoreboard due to early foul trouble, senior Aaron Krzyzewski also put in a solid all-around game, according to Lamison.
Southampton led East Hampton by 10 points after one quarter and never looked back. Chad Pike finished with 18 points and four rebounds while Alejo had 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Krzyzewski finished with 10 points, seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.
The Mariners were scheduled to host Elwood/John Glenn on Tuesday and will visit Mount Sinai on Thursday, January 12, at 4:30 p.m. After that, they will travel to Shoreham/Wading River on Saturday, January 14, for a noon tipoff.
The Southampton girls basketball team won its first League VI game of the season, defeating host East Hampton, 46-32, on January 3, before falling, 60-26, at home to Bayport/Blue Point last Thursday, January 5.
Taylor Pike led the Lady Mariners (1-3 League VI, 2-4 overall) in their win over East Hampton with 15 points. Ishanti Gumbs scored 12 points.
Southampton played at Elwood/John Glenn on Tuesday and was scheduled to host Mount Sinai on Thursday, January 12, at 6:15 p.m.
