A loose mylar balloon caused more than 1,000 businesses and homes to lose power in Southampton Village on the Fourth of July.

Shortly after noon, just as the village’s holiday parade was ending, the stray helium-filled balloon became caught in electric lines on Jobs Lane, and the metallic balloon short-circuited the wires and caused a nearby transformer to blow, according to Southampton Village Police Lieutenant Chris Wetter.

The power outage affected customers throughout a large section of the village, from Hill Street to Southampton Hospital, on Tuesday, although the hospital itself was not affected by the outage.

Traffic lights throughout the village went dark, including the signal at the North Sea Road intersection with Windmill Lane, so Village Police officers directed vehicles until power was restored at about 3 p.m.

Its time to crack down on these Mylar balloons... They're dangerous and an eyesore polluting our beaches and woods.

yes, if they've banned plastic shopping bags, this needs to also be on the top of the list next.

I think a bill to the guilty parties should do the trick. Loss of business, loss of enjoyment, potential risks to life, utility workers earning triple overtime on the 4th of July holiday...I bet that bill for one little selfish balloon owner's irresponsibility would be quite a bit more than they might expect and would serve as a deterrent in the future as well.

Yeah, but doesn't this story make everyone feel really safe? A balloon can take down our electric system. The Russians can stop hacking and just send their people to Party City.
