UPDATE: Five-Hour Standoff Ends Without Incident In North Sea

Sep 15, 2017 2:49 PM

UPDATE: Friday, 12:50 p.m.

A five-hour standoff with a North Sea man started when Southampton Town Police went to his residence to arrest him for an incident on September 2, when he strangled a woman, police said.

According to Police, Eric Mayo and a female—who both knew each other—were going to visit a friend at about 10 p.m. that night, but instead, he drove to a different location in Tuckahoe. Mr. Mayo then made sexual advances toward the woman, police said, and she refused. Police said Mr. Mayo then choked the woman, causing her to become dizzy, and made threatening statements to her.

The woman then broke free, police said, and called 9-1-1. When police arrived at the scene, Mr. Mayo had already left, police said, and they were unable to find him until Thursday at 2:39 p.m.

Southampton Town Police Lieutenant Susan Ralph said Southampton Town Police emergency services, the detective division and crisis negotiation team responded to the scene, and after a five hour standoff, Mr. Mayo surrendered to police without incident.

“I’d rather have it go long than have any injuries,” said Lt. Ralph. “The crisis negotiation team was able to contact [Mr. Mayo], and he surrendered willingly.”

A North Sea man was taken into custody Thursday evening after a five-hour standoff with Southampton Town Police.

Eric Mayo, 41, had refused to come out of his residence when the Town Police Detective Division arrived to arrest him on a felony count of strangulation in the second degree from a previous incident, according to Lieutenant Sue Ralph.

Lt. Ralph said “extra precautions were taken” and the Town Police’s Emergency Service Unit was deployed because Mr. Mayo had “made threats
against any law enforcement attempting to take him into custody.”

Eventually, Mr. Mayo surrendered without further incident, she added.

No further details were released on Thursday evening.
