Authorities Charge Shinnecock Man In Car Thefts

Dec 19, 2017 10:26 AM

Authorities have charged a Shinnecock Indian Reservation man in the thefts of three vehicles—all of which were reported stolen from Southampton Village this past summer—and said he could eventually be linked to another three.

State Police said they arrested David Trotman, 32, on Friday near the reservation, though they did not specify where, and charged him with three counts of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a felony, following an investigation that also involved Village Police.

Authorities said they linked Mr. Trotman—whom they believe worked alone—to the three vehicles, all of which were reported stolen from the village in late August. The stolen vehicles included an Audi A8, a Dodge Caravan and a Mercedes-Benz convertible, police said.

Two of the vehicles were recovered on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation, while the third was found at the Long Island Rail Road station in Hampton Bays.

Six vehicles were reported stolen in Southampton Village in the latter half of August, and authorities said they will eventually link all six thefts to Mr. Trotman. Police said they expect additional charges to be filed in the future.

Mr. Trotman was arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court on Friday and remanded to the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside after failing to post $25,000 cash bail, police said. He was due back in court on December 20.
