Temporary County Road 39 Traffic Light Installed To Reduce U.S. Open Traffic

A temporary traffic signal was erected on County Road 39, at the Shrubland Road intersection, to help control traffic during the U.S. Open tournament next week.

The light, first spotted in the intersection Wednesday afternoon and covered with burlap, is expected to be turned on by Friday, according to Tom Neely, Southampton Town's director of public transportation and traffic safety.

During the week of the U.S. Open, from Monday through Friday next week, Mr. Neely noted that the light will be blinking yellow most of the time, but may be manually switched to a steady red light when warranted by traffic.

A Suffolk County Police officer will manually control the light when needed. Mr. Neely explained that the County Police will turn the light red when shuttle buses bring people from the Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton to the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, where the tournament will be held.

No left turns will be allowed onto Shrubland Road.

The light was installed by Johnson Electrical Construction Corporation of Hauppauge. The light will be taken down after the tournament ends, Mr. Neely added.

Yet another inconvenience for us locals. We should get a tax credit for having to deal with all of this nonsense brought here by the golf tournament.

Nonsense? How about just say thank you for the economic activity...money to local suppliers, hotels, restaurants, workers, off-duty cops, sales tax to the state...maybe try being smart instead of just petty and small about a traffic light for a week? Too much? Sad.

Well... how much is this costing southampton? I also heard they are mot hiring locals for work. Police make enough doing their jobs. Is local restaurants and shops doing more? We shall find out after this craziness if it was worth it.

Adding a light does not reduce traffic. That light in particular now clogs the road that usually clears up at Tuckahoe and keeps it moving at a snails pace all the way to the traffic reducing light at shrubland. It makes it easier for the buses carrying the golf people and big wigs but no one else. Took me an hour to go from meineke to the light that is helping to reduce traffic. You should all be fired
