For the weekend before and weekend after Valentine’s Day, Center Stage at Southampton Cultural Center will present “Love Letters,” A.R. Gurney’s two-person epistolary play.
Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner—childhood friends born to wealth and privilege—begin their lifelong correspondence with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. They continue to exchange letters throughout momentous occasions, loves and separations.
“To be blunt, I love this play—or hybrid of a play. Part play, part reading, part confession, part lesson, ‘Love Letters’ is equally, smart, touching, tender and true,” remarked director Michael Disher in a statement. “It is a perfect show during which to hold the hand of the one you love.”
The rotating cast features Daniel Becker, Barbara-Jo Howard, John Leonard and Catherine Maloney. Mr. Becker and Ms. Howard are paired for two performances, as are Mr. Leonard and Ms. Maloney. On Sundays, they switch partners.
Between February 8 and 17, performances will take place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. The Southampton Cultural Center is located at 25 Pond Lane, Southampton Village. Tickets are $25, or $12 for students under 21 with ID. Brunch and theater packages are $45 to $55, and dinner and theater packages are $69. Call 631-287-4377 or visit scc-arts.org.
