Shinnecock Indian Nation Angered By Kardashian Posing In Headdress

Jul 2, 2014 10:03 AM

Summertime North Sea resident Khloe Kardashian is coming under fire for donning a traditional Native American headdress late last month at her niece’s birthday party in California.

Last week, members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation expressed their disappointment with Khloe and her sister Kim for actions that the tribe considers disrespectful to Native Americans, and considered a protest outside the Kardashians’ store, DASH, in Southampton on Thursday. It was eventually canceled.

The protest was sparked by pictures posted online following a birthday party for Kim’s daughter, North West, during which Khloe posed next to a tepee while wearing a traditional feather headdress.

Instead of protesting, the tribe has opted to reach out to the famous sisters, hoping to be able to educate them both on Native American and Shinnecock history.

Last week, Shinnecock Indian Nation Trustee Nichol Banks went to the DASH store on Jobs Lane—the focus of the Kardashian family’s latest reality TV venture, “Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons”—and left a business card with the store manager, saying if the Kardashians are interested they can contact the Shinnecocks to learn the significance of Native American culture, including the historical context behind headdresses like the one worn by Ms. Kardashian.

“A headdress is something that is worn as a sign of honor, it is worn with pride based on your accomplishments in life,” Ms. Banks said. “It is something that is worn by our tribal leadership, and not something that you would make a mockery out of.”

Members of the Shinnecock Tribe are not the only ones upset. This week, Native Americans nationwide have called the pictures insensitive and offensive. At the same time, Kim Kardashian West, who was spotted on the East End this week, has been urged to speak against a New York-based artist, Hannah Kunkle, who recently portrayed her as a Hindu deity.

It's kind of hypocritical if you ask me. You can buy a headdress at the pow wow at just about every merchandise tent there.

Really come on people, just stop with all this, so she was wearing a headdress - so what. Instead of looking at it as a negative look at is as a compliment. Get over yourselves. If you dont want anyone wearing them then you should not sell them peroid!!!!!!

Do the Shinnecocks protest the Atlanta Braves and their fans who partake in the Tomohawk Chop or is that OK because it depicts Indians as "brave"?

In related news, the Shinnecock Nation is boycotting anyone who ever played "cowboys and Indians" as a kid, because frankly, they should know better.

ABSOLUTE SELF SERVING NONSENSE. Shame on these few tribal members for piling on the shameless crusade against these women by creating nonsensical drama to draw attention to themselves. It is doubtful that these few members represent the majority of the tribe who is smart enough to see through this embarrassing grandstanding. There was no insult, intentional or otherwise here, and in fact the conduct these few tribal members are "disappointed" about is constitutional protected and absolutely none ...more

Just read it - thanks for the link which will probably get deleted. Obviously the level of meaning is different, but it's akin to college and HS football players who earn stickers for their helmets based on their play (I'm not equating Native American bravery to football). That being said, it's still ridiculous to be outraged enough to protest the families business because one member wore a headdress at a private party. I've never been to the PowWow but I believe the poster who said they are ...more

They weren't in the Hamptons, they were in California. Where would you like them to go? I am not a fan, but seriously, if you are looking for an insult you are sure to find one.

I'm outraged of the shinnecocks selling cigarettes for 2 bucks a pack and killing people with cancer. I'm outraged that a handful of shinnecocks make money on cigarettes and the rest wallow in poverty. They talk about unity? The true Shinnecocks that are respectful to their customs would never sell cigarettes nor make money off any addiction.
