County Road 39 Closed Eastbound In Shinnecock Hills Wednesday Evening While Police Clear Crash

Dec 18, 2014 11:20 AM

The eastbound lane of County Road 39 was closed in Shinnecock Hills just after 6 p.m. near the Hampton Gas station close to Hill Station Road as police cleared an accident.

Southampton Town Police were on the scene, with State Police assisting, although an officer could not immediately provide details about the crash, or how long that side of the road was expected to be closed.

Traffic was being directed onto Hill Station Road.

It's been at least a week since some portion of County Rd 39 was closed down due to another horrible traffic accident. When is the town going to get this road under control?

What, are you suggesting they lower the peed limit to 15 mph? That is how knee-jerk politicians and traffic "engineers" typically respond. CR39 is a small country road being utilized 10X more than was conceived.

A bold, more effective plan would be to condemn the adjacent parcels and create more of a thoroughfare, with parallel side streets and limited access points.

I've watched people drive this stretch for years. They drive well faster than 40 MPH, and take really foolish chances trying to make left turns. You can only blame the object to a point. At some point, the blame falls on the operators.

Slow down, don't try to beat the lights, and let the traffic lights and their timing do their job.

The road belongs to the county who expanded it into this mess. What they have done is move the clog east where commuters can now cut through what was once sleepy residential areas all in the name of moving traffic. Now four lanes with people speeding all the time, with intersections that used to be safe are now dangerous. The county should close down to one lane each way which will slow down traffic and deaths and leave the clog out on Sunrise where only the deer will mind.

Perhaps if our road was policed regularly in BOTH directions, it would help to actually get people to slow down to the 35 miles per hour, or somewhat close to it. Every single day cars are blowing past us on the road going faster even the 55 mph from the highway!

East Hampton has a stretch by the Synagogue that is policed regularly, and you see most of the cars slowing down there. We need to do the same here.

Residents need to be more conscientious about their speeds in their ...more
