Skating rink returns to Southampton Village

Jan 7, 2009 10:23 AM

The Southampton Village ice-skating rink returned to Agawam Park on Tuesday, and this winter, if temperatures stay low enough long enough, the facility may actually get used.

The open-air rink made its debut last winter, but Mother Nature did not cooperate. It was never cold enough for the rink to completely freeze, and it was taken down before a single skater set foot on it.

The Southampton Village Department of Public Works is more optimistic this winter. It expects the ice will be usable by next week. For information, call Village Hall at (631) 283-0247.

Really, how much can it cost? It's not like they're constructing a refrigeration system or anything. A good idea.

Agawam lake was good enough to skate on when I was a kid growing up in Southampton. It appears that too many candy asses have relocated to the area and prefer a platic skating rink rather than good ole mother nature.

I want to thank Southampton Village for constructing the ice rink - my children and I had a wonderful time on it Saturday afternoon. For a time we had the whole rink to ourselves. I'm surprised more people didn't take advantage, especially those with young children. It was my 6 year olds first time skating, and she had the time of her life.

thanks again

Fabulous Idea. Southampton has and continues to be a place where family can get together and enjoy the outdoors. Fun wholesome activity in a great location! We live in a great place!

While it does cost money to have this ice skating rink... it is very cost beneficial. I love my memories skating on real ponds, however we could all agree that nature is no longer cold enough to sustain a safe environment for skaters. If you take in the cost of potential human safety (and lawsuits) along with our cost for the rescuers for people who fall through the ice on natural ponds... I would have to think that this is a great "cost" to our community and we are lucky that our town cares ...more
