The South Fork could get as much as a foot of snow in some areas on Wednesday, forecasters are predicting.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the East End that takes effect at midnight tonight, February 9, and continues through 6 a.m. on Thursday, February 11.

Snow is expected to develop later tonight and become heavy at times on Wednesday before slowly tapering off, according to the weather service. Accumulations of 6 to 12 inches of snow are expected.

East to northeast wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph are possible and may cause snowdrifts and power outages.

The weather service advises motorists to travel only in an emergency and keep a flashlight, food and water in their vehicles.

A similar forecast, for last Friday, February 5, did not come to fruition locally: While the storm dumped snow on much of the Eastern Seaboard and into the Mid-Atlantic states, the East End of the island was spared major precipitation.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy announced that the county’s Emergency Operations Center in Yaphank will open early on Wednesday, at 7 a.m., to coordinate local municipalities’ response to the storm.

Thanks Fonzi for that prediction...I will take that under advisement when it comes to decision making going forward.

At least this forecast is better than it was this past weekend when they were saying anywhere from 4 to 12 inches of snow...or a dusting... Now everyone make sure they panic and invade your local supermarket to but a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk becuase the stores won't be open for about a month after this storm. LOL

We should all listen to FONZI I heard on one weather channell we were likely to get a 12 inch dusting,

What no high tides for the surrounding area?! Just kidding P Matt, thanks for the info. It sounds like a mess. I guess they throw some salt around, then plow, then plow again, then maybe salt and sand. After that there will be drifting snow so I guess plow. Then wicked cold and wind so throw more salt and sand. Hope for sun by friday?

What? No comments from Fleming or Hughes on this vital issue? Can Supervisor ATH control the weather again and save the Town from snow?
Stay tuned.

Never fails. Every time it snows some denier of science starts squawking about "global warming is a lie." If only the weather were as predictable as you and your brainless brethren.

have you been reading the news recently. seems like it is about as far from "science" as you can get. Read this report recently prepared by the EPA:

I have to say unlike the last sotrm we had we had great plowing in WH area. Our road was clea enough to see black top every time the storm eased up. I guess th etown caught the hint we weren't happy with the last response.

Also did you know the weather channel sued Al Gore for his BS about global
warming. If I recall correctly when I was in school we learned about the ice
age, dinasuars etc. It just might be the natural progression of the earth, not the propaganda our govenment feeds us. It's all about making money
